Improving vehicle safety

New safety laws proposed for quad bikes and side-by-sides

The Office of Industrial Relations (OIR) is investigating a proposal to introduce new safety regulations for people operating quad bikes and side-by-side vehicles (SSVs) in a workplace.

Did you know that about one in five quad bike incidents results in head injury? With concerns rising over driver behavior, safety and compliance to wear helmets, the Queensland Government have recommended changing existing regulations to improve quad bike and SSV safety, due to the continual increase of vehicle fatalities on Queensland roads.

These changes include:

  • Mandating helmet use
  • Banning children on adult quad bikes and SSVs
  • Passenger restrictions for some vehicles
  • Seat belt requirements for SSVs (if already installed)
The potential for training requirements is still being investigated, however private use of quad bikes and SSVs (outside of a workplace) is not being considered. Read the full article here!

Mining Legend Passes

RON SAYERS 1952 - 2022

On 9th May 2022, Kalgoorlie mining industry stalwart and Ausdrill founder, Ron Sayers, passed away at age 70. Ron was certainly a character you wanted in your life and had a huge passion for the company and the people who worked for him.

Starting out as a young mechanic on the Golden Mile, to heading one of the world's biggest drilling companies, Ron's passion never strayed from his roots.

Growing the business from having just a handful of employees to nearly 5000 and expanding to Africa and South America, the later renamed Perenti company continues to flourish through its merger with Barminco, since Sayers retirement in 2018.

Perenti Managing Director and CEO, Mark Norwell, shared popular memories during the celebrations of Ron's life achievements, stating:

"He built a family culture within the business that was epitomised by one of his pet projects, the Ausdrill Way, a fund that all employees paid into, to support their colleagues who fell on hard times or became seriously sick or ill," he said.

He was a hard worker, who expected the same from his loyal employees and enjoyed every minute of what he was doing. Ron was cherished by all who had the pleasure to meet him and his astonishing resilience and accomplishments will certainly never be taken for granted.
