FIRST AID & CPR IN THE WORKPLACE

Why IS First Aid & CPR Important in a Workplace

Providing immediate and effective first aid to workers or others who have been injured or become ill at the workplace may reduce the severity of the injury or illness and promote recovery. In some cases it could mean the difference between life and death.

Who has health and safety duties in relation to first aid?

A person conducting a business or undertaking has the primary duty under the WHS Act to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, that workers and other persons are not exposed to health and safety risks arising from the business or undertaking.

The WHS Regulations place specific obligations on a person conducting a business or undertaking in relation to first aid, including requirements to:

  • provide first aid equipment and ensure each worker at the workplace has access to the
    equipment
  • ensure access to facilities for the administration of first aid
  • ensure that an adequate number of workers are trained to administer first aid at the workplace or that workers have access to an adequate number of other people who have been trained to administer first aid

A person conducting a business or undertaking may not need to provide first aid equipment
or facilities if these are already provided by another duty holder at the workplace and they
are adequate and easily accessible at the times that the workers carry out work.

FIRST AID IN THE WORKPLACE CODE OF PRACTICE

Benefits of learning first aid and CPR?

It save lives!

Learning first aid and CPR is a significant step to take in terms of gaining awareness of one’s capabilities with the treatment of injuries and other life-saving practices. For example, in understanding how cuts and bruises are treated, personnel can also understand how these injuries occur. In understanding how wounds are formed and treated, staff are better equipped in knowing how to avoid these injuries. Becoming more safety aware helps in lessening the frequency of injuries that occur in the workplace.

As well, learning life-saving practices can help personnel better recognise the symptoms of injury in others, in turn helping them access or receive treatment more quickly.

Course overview:

HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation: This short course describes the skills and knowledge required to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) Guidelines.
