WORKING IN WINTER

TIPS TO STAY SAFE IN COLD WEATHER OR ENVIRONMENTS

Its starting to get a bit nippy up here in  Queensland, which means its time to start working smarter - not harder. Many tasks such as loading, operating machinery and the like can become increasingly more difficult and present more risks when working in cold weather. Much like working in high temperatures, it is important for workers be aware of the potential safety risks, to stay safe this winter.

Both environmental and personal factors can implement risks to workers. Environmental factors include air temperature, humidity, and wind, while Personal factors can include health, low body temperature, age, prescription medication, and the level of physical activity required.

Control measures which should be considered (but not solely relied on) when working in the colder months include:

  • Providing protection through warm and waterproof clothing and dressing in layers.
  • Keeping workers dry and if they become wet, requesting they change immediately into dry clothes.
  • Providing opportunities for workers not used to working in cold conditions to acclimatize (e.g. rotate jobs and take regular breaks).

It is also always helpful to plan ahead, you can do so by:

  • Monitoring weather forecasts for conditions that may increase the risk of hypothermia.
  • Considering if tasks can be completed indoors, remotely or in a heated cab of a vehicle and if time in the cold can be shortened (or work can be done during warmer times).
  • Scheduling warm-up breaks for outdoor workers and hold recesses indoors.

RISKS OF UNDER-TRAINED WORKERS

HOW TO IDENTIFY AND MANAGE SAFETY RISKS OF UNDER-TRAINED WORKERS

Insufficiently or inadequately trained workers in the heavy vehicle industry can pose serious safety risks to themselves, colleagues and the general public, as well as present dangers to infrastructure and the environment. Despite having a heavy vehicle driver's licence, ones ability to operate or maintain a heavy vehicle cannot be assumed, as additional training may be required to ensure safe and efficient practices are followed.

It is both important and required (under HVNL- section 26C) for both new and existing workers to be appropriately trained, to ensure heavy vehicle transport operations are safe, reliable and compliant. Additionally, it is critical for workers to understand the risks and hazards associated with their tasks and workplace to prevent injury, loss or damage.

Drivers and other workers have a duty to manage safety risks by participating in regular skills training and assessment. Training must be specific to the industry and tasks, while building on an individual's skills, qualifications and level of assurance.

How to keep up to date with your training:

  • Complete a training review of new and existing workers
  • Participate in industry refresher training
  • Maintain training records
  • Provide adequate supervision in the workplace
